As the daughter of the Sheriff, Jill Gillingham was aware, early on,
that she and her family lived a life that only police families could understand.
The force was almost like a brother to Jill, and a third child to her mother, as it demanded sacrifices and commitment. Indeed, Jill’s father was often absent at dinner, instead working his beat on the streets of Santa Clara County. But Jill and her family knew that their sacrifices were for the greater good.  Icelandic Lessons
Jill gained an even deeper understanding of the value of the community when she lived in Iceland as an exchange student. As she learned their ancient language, she discovered the island’s profound communal spirit – the emphasis its people placed on pulling together during times of need. But her journey to the Arctic Circle nourished her in another way – it allowed her to explore her burgeoning interest in photography. Jill took sixty rolls of film during the eight-week sojourn on the island, and she continues, to this day, to scrapbook the stills. More importantly, her adventure helped her understand the value of pursuing her passions, of uncovering her greater purpose. This purpose, she realized, is what she must give to others.
 A Study of the Soul
Photography allows Jill to document the soul, to offer her subjects a new perspective on their lives, which many are grateful for. Jill honed her talent with photography classes at Northeastern University, where she also earned her bachelor’s degree in Sociology. And she has given friends, family, and community members – her daughters, her husband (a law enforcement officer), local children, members of the Stanford University band (for whom she played trombone), the people in her charity groups, officers at police functions, and others – hundreds of photographs of many special events. She is proud that she can use art to contribute to her community.
